Located in Arusha city in northern Tanzania, Mount Meru is a stunning backdrop that rivals even Africa’s highest summit, Mount Kilimanjaro. With its massive cliffs, it dominates the Arusha National Park and has been the subject of myths and legends for decades. For photographers, this magnificent mountain is a true Mecca.
Mount Meru is a dormant volcanic mountain and Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, peaking at 4562 meters above sea level. The hill became famous mainly because it is only 70 km from Mount Kilimanjaro and is famous as a “warm-up” trek for climbers.
Climbing Mount Meru requires more technical skill than climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. On the fourth day of your trek, you’ll have the chance to see various wildlife, including buffalo, antelopes, giraffes, and baboons. You’ll also pass beautiful waterfalls and unique Meru streams. To ensure your safety, a park ranger will accompany your group.
Overall, Mount Meru offers a beautiful and less crowded trekking experience for those seeking to explore Tanzania’s natural beauty. While it may not reach the extreme altitudes of Kilimanjaro, it remains a rewarding adventure with its unique landscapes and stunning views from the summit. Trekkers often find that combining a Mount Meru climb with a Kilimanjaro expedition creates an enriching and comprehensive experience of Tanzania’s mountainous terrain and diverse ecosystems.
